چکیده

Age of information is a newly proposed metric that captures the freshness of information at end-users. The age measures the amount of time that elapsed since the latest information was generated at a source. In this context, we study an age minimization problem over a wireless broadcast network to keep many users updated on timely information, where only one user can be served at a time. We formulate a Markov decision process (MDP) to find dynamic scheduling algorithms, with the purpose of minimizing the long-run average age. We show that an optimal scheduling algorithm for the MDP is a simple stationary switch type. However, the optimal scheduling algorithm is not easy to implement because of the MDP’s infinite state space. Using a sequence of finite-state approximate MDPs, we successfully develop both optimal off-line and on-line scheduling algorithms. We validate the algorithms via numerical studies, and surprisingly show that the performance of no-buffer networks is very close to that of networks with buffers.

Broadcast Routing in Wireless Ad-Hoc Networks: A Particle Swarm optimization Approach

While routing in multi-hop packet radio networks (static Ad-hoc wireless networks), it is crucial to minimize power consumption since nodes are powered by batteries of limited capacity and it is expensive to recharge the device. This paper studies the problem of broadcast routing in radio networks. Given a network with an identified source node, any broadcast routing is considered as a directed...

Age of Information: Whittle Index for Scheduling Stochastic Arrivals

Age of information is a new concept that characterizes the freshness of information at end devices. This paper studies the age of information from a scheduling perspective. We consider that a base-station updates many users on stochastic information arrivals over a wireless broadcast network, where only one user can be updated for each time. In this context, we aim at developing a transmission ...

Quasi Random Deployment Strategy for Reliable Communication Backbones in Wireless Sensor Networks

Topology construction and topology maintenance are significant sub-problems of topology control. Spanning tree based algorithms for topology control are basically transmission range based type construction algorithms. The construction of an effective backbone, however, is indirectly related to the placement of nodes. Also, the dependence of network reliability on the communication path undertak...
